Past Events

Here are some of the past events that have taken place at the Ashill village hall.

Saturday August 6th 2016

68th Ashill Flower Show

The 68th Ashill Flower Show was held on Saturday August 6th in the Village Hall. The show was well supported with an increase in entries in all classes compared to last year. The prizes were presented by Martin and Graeme Tucker who grew up in the Village and who have a historic connection to the Show through their mother, Molly Tucker, who was Treasurer in the eighties. The Edwards Rose Bowl, for the Overall Show Winner, went to Helen Gibson; Phyllis Pengelly won the Molly Tucker Cup for most points in the Flower section; Janet Derrett and Greta Edwards were joint winners of the Quick Plate for most points in the Cookery and House Craft section; Pam Browne won the Frank Clarke Trophy for most points in the Fruit and Vegetable section and the Tidball Shield went to Benjie Pitts, overall winner of the Children’s section. The Flower Show organising Committee presented a patio rose to Mrs Phyllis Sanders, who will be 90 next month and has been displaying flowers and cookery for around sixty years, right up to this year’s show. In all that time Phyllis has only missed one show.

Saturday 07th November

Opening of the Childrens Play area

We welcomed around 50 local residents to help us celebrate the opening of the play park. After an awful morning of rain and more rain, the weather held and around 25 local children were able to officially start playing on the new play equipment whilst mums and dads, gannies and grandads had a nice drink in the village hall. Very special thanks to Richard Vincent, Jenny and Andy at the Ashill Inn, Cullompton Tesco, Uffculme Parish Council and for helping fund the play area, and Julia and Gary Adamson for leading the installation.

Fireworks night

After another day of torrential rain, the skies cleared, the bar opened, food was ready and we had the return of the Ashill Fireworks. It was very well attended with villagers and others from afar seeing a brilliant display. Many positive comments were heard and we think there demand is there to repeat it. Special thanks again to Jenny and Andy at the Ashill Inn and Richard Vincent for supporting the event and to many locals for manning the collecting buckets, helping in the bar or serving food.

September - October 2015

Family Skittles

After four weeks and a close fought final, the winners were Malcolm, Dave, Tony and Steve. There were some close games but five fun filled nights. Thanks to everyone who took part. Hope to see even more of you next year. Thanks to Martyn and Brenda Fewtrell for organising.

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Charity Quiz

The Charity Curry and Quiz night on the 19 September was a great success with 72 people attending. In all 12 teams competed against each other for the coveted prize of a bottle of wine! Dave Rich and Nick Mortimer, resident Quiz Masters, did a wonderful job providing a wide range of questions to tax the brain. The Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Committee made a wide range of tasty curries which were very tasty. The winners of the night were ‘The Dark Horses’ and the night raised over £500 for the Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline. All bar profits went to the Village Hall. Thanks to Steve and Becky for manning the bar.

Saturday 1st August 2015

Successful as ever with 57 registered entries in the vegetable category, 89 in the cookery and 78 in the flowers. It was very pleasing to see 27 entries in the children’s competition (+17 from 2014). Rosalie Fleet was the overall show winner who narrowly beat Pam Browne.'

The Ashill Book Club coffee morning and book sale was a great success. We had a fantastic range of books donated by the local community and an outstanding collection of very tasty cakes. The event and raised just under £200 for the charity Book Trust (http://www.booktrust.org.uk/). A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event (and a special note - thanks to Sue and Dianne for organising the event).

The 2015 Beer and Music Festival was another great success. Thanks to everyone who helped organise, collect drinks, prepare the site/beers, volunteer on the day and tidy up. It would never happen without you. Special thanks to the sponsors whose very kind contributions really help the event run smoothly.

Friday night was a little quieter than normal probably due to the awful weather forecast (that didn’t really materialise). Perhaps we should ask the Met Office for a donation? Despite that we sold a fair amount of ale and other drinks and the crowds were entertained by two great bands – Dr Chipper and Filta.

Saturday was much better weather, and despite a fairly quiet start, the crowds soon picked up. Despite a few comments, Saturday was a massive success. The early crowds saw Byzantium Lane, Brooklyn and Cash, and Nicole Wakeling. The early evening crowds were rocked by Cloutsham and perennial favourites The Thorvertones kept us all entertained until late.

Sold Out!

We sold out of most ales, and the pay bar sold out of all lager! I think everyone enjoyed their free sample of Cholula Hot Sauce! The site was pretty clean of litter which made an easy job for the bleary eyed clean up crew on Sunday morning.

Donation To Honeylands Children Charity!

We made approximately a fantastic £5000 all of which goes to charity. This year we are really pleased to donate £1000 to Honeylands Children Charity. In their own words "the centre provides assessment and interventions for young children with complex special needs, life limiting conditions, physical and mental developmental needs".

Presentation Evening!

We held the presentation evening on 25 June with  Les Christiansen (Chairman) who was delighted to with the £1000 cheque.  He has been kind enough to mention us in his blog See Here
